Jordy Top 5 - Interview by Craig Jarvis

When you’re second in the world everyone wants a piece of you, and they want to know what you’re thinking. Just like us.

Wavescape: So bru. Your five favourite WCT surfers… and go!

Jordy: Kelly. He is just so experienced at every single spot. Last year at Tavarua it really stood out why he is the best in the world. He really knows all the waves on the tour, and he knows his equipment. He’s got his equipment so dialed it’s a joke.

Mick Fanning He is just the ultimate competitor. He is so well structured. He has a plan and he sticks to it, and it shows in his surfing, you know. He’s on a mission, and he never falls off.

John John. A lot of people doubted him. Growing up he went through a gawky stage, he was all gangly, and his style wasn’t quite right. Then overnight he just became this tubes and airs guy. They became his strongest points. I think he needs to work on his turns and stuff….

Hold on. Let’s rewind that thought. John John needs to work on his turns?

Jordy: Yes. His barrel riding and big wave surfing and airs are second to none, but he needs to work on his turns.

Then there’s Gabriel. He is just so consistent. He is so energetic in the water and catches a lot of waves. If he goes for 10 airs he’s landing 9 and a half of them. He never puts a foot wrong in a heat. You only beat him when you go flat out from the start and he gets left behind. He’s also very confident. People might mistake confidence for arrogance at times. I don’t really hang out with him too much. He seems a nice guy. He is a prick in the water, but that’s just how he is. I haven’t surfed against Gabriel yet.

There’s also Kerrzy. I like Kerrzy. He’s always got a smile on his face. I surf with him a lot and he always inspires me with his airs and stuff. He’s also a really good tube rider, backhand especially. He’s a fun guy to be around. I love hanging out with him and his wife and kid; they’re cool. He’s a full charger. Actually, you know what he is? Kerrzy is the ultimate frother. He froths out so hard. When someone gets so excited I definitely feed off it. Whether it’s going skateboarding or snowboarding or whatever - he’s always amped, and it’s a good thing.

Joel the world champ doesn’t feature on your radar?

Jordy: No, not any more (laughs). No. He’s definitely one of the best surfers in the world but he’s not one of my favourites.

You guys had a bit of a rivalry going this time last year? What was that all about? Was that just us media having some fun?

Jordy: That happens. People like to flare things up, as you of all people should know. He was one of my idols growing up. For sure. When I was 17 years old it was all Joel Parkinson. I used to love watching him surf and I still do.

But as a world champion he doesn’t feature in your top five?

Jordy: Aaaah. No. He doesn’t. I take my hat off to him for his persistence, four runner-up spots and still going for it and getting a world title, it’s quite incredible.

So that’s 6 surfers we’ve covered. Let’s go one more. Just for fun. . He’s not on the tour so he can’t be one of your fave CT surfers, but whatchu reckon on Dane Reynolds?

Jordy: Dane is amazing. He is one of the world best surfers. I’d say he’s second best in the world, behind Kelly. Dane is someone I can relate to. He is a bigger sort of person; he goes hard into all of his turns. Sometimes it doesn’t work but he goes hard. I guess that’s why he’s on the free surfing route. He’s all about complete commitment. I wish he would just commit to the tour. When he was on tour I loved watching him, it got me really pumped up. Pumped to surf my heats.
